Cherchesov breaks off interview due to doping doubts

The 54-year-old Tscherchessov canceled an interview with the news magazine Der Spiegel after he was asked about doubts about Sbornaja's performance.

“Ask me about things that have been factually proven and I will give you an answer,” said Cherchesov and left the room, according to Spiegel. Only after a lengthy discussion was the trainer willing to continue the interview.

“Russia doesn’t care what you think,” said Cherchesov, when asked whether people in Russia could understand that the athletes were being watched with suspicion in view of the institutional doping system at the Winter Olympics in Sochi. The Russian team surprisingly made it to the quarterfinals at the final round and achieved one of the highest mileage performances of all tournament teams.

Chertchesov, who initially left his own future as national coach open, viewed the elimination against finalists Croatia as a disappointment: “There was a trophy and we didn't have it in our hands, we didn't have a medal on our chests. This is not a success.”

During the final round there were repeated doping allegations against a Russian World Cup candidate who is on a suspect list by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). This is said to be Ruslan Kambolow from two-time champion Rubin Kazan, who was initially in the host's provisional World Cup squad, but was not officially nominated due to an injury. “Can’t he be on a suspect list?” Cherchesov asked briefly. FIFA had investigated Kambolow, but stopped the investigation and closed the "Russia file" on May 22 and cleared the host's World Cup squad of doping suspicions.
