Within minutes of the final whistle of the game against Croatia, tens of thousands of football fans flocked to the Champs-Elysses and transformed it into a celebration mile full of French flags. “This victory makes me so proud,” said one celebrant on the boulevard. “This World Cup has brought us all together.” The chant “On est les champions” (“We are the champions”) could be heard everywhere. As a precaution, the police closed the area around the magnificent boulevard to cars during the game. The biggest celebrations took place in a fan zone with 90.000 people in front of the Eiffel Tower. In Notre-Dame Cathedral the bells rang in honor of the “Equipe Tricolore”.

Meanwhile, there was great disappointment in Croatia's capital: around 100.000 fans who were out and about in the streets of Zagreb reacted with disappointment, disbelief or even bewilderment. Even though many tears were shed, the TV presenter already showed the way for the coming days: “We will celebrate our boys like that too, because they deserve it.” The biggest tabloid “24sata” headlined: “Only silver, but with golden shine. You are the champions for us.”

French President Emmanuel Macron and Croatian President Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic experienced the game together in the stadium in Moscow. While Macron cheered exuberantly and danced for joy, Grabar-Kitarovic comforted her players. Just in time for the award ceremony, a downpour surprised them as well as the hosts Vladimir Putin and FIFA boss Gianni Infantino, who were also present. To great cheers, captain Hugo Lloris lifted the gold trophy into the rain-soaked evening sky of Moscow's Luzhniki Stadium. At the same time, a massive fountain of golden confetti started, which lay like a carpet on the lawn of the final arena - and also stuck to the players. The organizers then set off huge fireworks over the stadium and quickly made the rain forgotten.
