World Cup CHECK| Mohamed Salah is the “King of Egypt”

The 25-year-old, who matured into a wonder striker under Jürgen Klopp at Liverpool FC, is Africa's Footballer of the Year, Player of the Year in England and top scorer in the Premier League. “He’s the King of Egypt,” enthused Reds teammate Emre Can about the pharaohs’ fixture. Before the World Cup, Salah will play the Champions League final against Real Madrid in Kiev on Saturday (May 26th).

Salah himself helped Egypt win the World Cup for the first time in 28 years. With his last-minute penalty (90+5) in the 2-1 win against the Republic of Congo, the man from Nagrig secured their third finals appearance.

Coach Héctor Cúper relies on Mohamed Elneny from Arsenal FC in midfield, who had to end his season in England early due to an ankle injury. The coach from Argentina trusts a real oldie in goal. Essam el-Hadary, now 45, is set to replace Colombia goalkeeper Faryd Mondragon as the oldest player to have played at a World Cup. Mondragon was 2014 years and 43 days old in his last appearance at the 3 finals.

“The journey is difficult because all the teams are strong,” said Cúper before the group games against Russia, Saudi Arabia and Uruguay. “We have already achieved many goals, but we are far from reaching the peak of our ambitions.”

Egypt will play its first World Cup game on Friday, June 15th. The game against Uruguay at the Yekaterinburg Stadium starts at 14 p.m. CEST.
