World Cup journey through time – June 17.6.1970, XNUMX: the “game of the century”

But let's start with that one 56 years ago. On June 17, 1962, defending champions Brazil and Czechoslovakia faced each other in the final of the 7th World Cup in Santiago de Chile.

The Brazilians had already lost their superstar Pelé, injured after the first game of that World Cup, who four years earlier, as a 1-year-old, had sensationally played a decisive role in the Brazilians' first World Cup title with six goals.

In the final against Czechoslovakia, favorite Brazil initially had a bit of trouble and went behind 0-1, but in the end the South Americans clearly won 3-1 and defended their title - even without Pelé.

Pure drama in the Aztec Stadium 8 years later, on June 17, 1970, a special chapter in football history was written in the Aztec Stadium in Mexico City: Germany and Italy faced each other in the World Cup semi-finals in front of over 103.000 spectators.

Both teams were full of football legends: Sepp Maier, Uwe Seeler, Berti Vogts, Franz Beckenbauer, Wolfgang Overath, Karl-Heinz Schnellinger and Gerd Müller on the one hand, Enrico Albertosi, Giacinto Facchetti, Tarcisio Burgnich, Sandro Mazzola, Gianni Rivera , Roberto Boninsegna and Gigi Riva on the other.

They all became the main actors in the “play of the century” with an exceptionally dramatic script. The “Azzurri” took the lead in the 8th minute thanks to Boninsegna and stayed that way for a long time. Until, of all people, Italian legionnaire Schnellinger scored the equalizer in the final minute, which forced the most turbulent extra time of all time.

First, Müller gave the Germans the lead for the first time (94th), but it only lasted for 4 minutes until Burgnich made it 2-2 (98th). Then Riva also scored for the “Azzurri” (104th), but Müller also scored again (110th). This time the Germans' joy only lasted a short time because the Italian Rivera scored the 4-3 winning goal in the next attack (111th).

Italy won this semi-final battle and moved into the final against Brazil.
