On June 21, 1970, 48 years ago, Brazil and Italy faced each other in the World Cup final in the Aztec Stadium in Mexico City. While the Brazilians had quite confidently survived the semi-final against Uruguay 3-1, the “Azzurri” had to go through the legendary, incredibly dramatic 4:3 after extra time against Germany, which was reported in detail here.

This increased pressure in the semi-final may have played a role, but Brazil's 4-1 final triumph was definitely deserved. The greatest footballer of all time opened the scoring: Pelé scored 1-0 with a header and was ultimately able to celebrate his third World Cup title, after 1958 and 1962.

Brazil's three further goals after Boninsegna's temporary equalizer were scored by Gérson, Jairzinho and Carlos Alberto, all in the second half of the game. Celebrations were allowed again in Rio.

Germany experiences its Cordoba Eight years later, on June 21, 1978, in Argentina, Austria and Germany experienced a match on the last match day of the final round, which at that time replaced the round of XNUMX, quarter and semi-finals, which is sure to have a place in the football history books.

In the so-called “Disgrace of Cordoba” of the DFB team against Austria – understandably referred to in Austria as the “Miracle of Córdoba” – the Germans suffered a 2-3 defeat in the last World Cup game under the aegis of national coach Helmut Schön. Edi Finger's legendary reporting It was Austria's first victory over a German team in 47 years. Two goals, including the decisive 3-2, were scored by Hans Krankl, who was then celebrated by his compatriots and in particular by the Austrian radio reporter Edi Finger in a passionate report that was classified as legendary.

The goal to equalize 1-1 for Austria was scored by the later German national coach Berti Vogts with an own goal.

From a sporting perspective, however, this result was meaningless for the Austrians, as they were still eliminated as bottom of the group along with the third-placed Germans.
