Maradona, the other superstar Argentina and Germany faced each other in the 1986 final. Both qualified for the final with 2-0 victories in the semi-finals - Germany defeated France and Argentina defeated the Belgians.

Argentina were the clear favorites in the final and had a little more of the game, but neither side had any great chances to score, which was also due to the fact that Lothar Matthäus mostly had his opponent Diego Maradona under control.

The Argentines took the lead with a free kick midway through the first half after German goalkeeper Schumacher undercut a ball crossed into the penalty area, allowing Libero Brown to head it into an empty net.

After just under an hour it was 2-0, but as against England, the Argentinians had now completely retreated. Germany now had more of the game, but was unable to create any great chances. It only became dangerous at set pieces, two corners kicked by Andreas Brehme from the left led to the equalizer eight minutes before the end.

However, the German players exposed their defense to secure the decision before extra time and ran into an Argentinian counterattack less than three minutes after the equalizer - Maradona pass, Burruchaga solo - and it was 3-2 for the South Americans.
