Andreas Castiglioni presents the natural track toboggan season

The coming season has some news coming up, for example the Eliminator (formerly the pursuer) is returning to the racing calendar at the World Cup opener in Winterleiten...

Andreas Castiglioni: “We last held an eliminator in January 2020 at the World Cup in Passeier. This format in the direct knockout system is very well received by the fans, as there are winners and losers in practically every round. Such a race would have been planned for the final in Moscow last winter, but due to the attack on Ukraine the final was canceled without replacement. The cards will probably be reshuffled for everyone at the Eliminator on December 18th.”

There will be more changes throughout the season, right?

“With Jaufental there is a new venue in the World Cup calendar. The organizers there have shown in recent years with the Junior World Cup, the Junior European Championships and the Junior World Championships that they can organize first-class races. Jaufental is certainly an asset for the World Cup.”

The highlight will be the World Cup in Romania in February?

“From a sporting perspective, a World Cup is always the highlight of the season. And here too we are breaking new ground this time: before the World Championships in Vatra Dornei, we are holding a World Cup there, followed by the title fights. In this way, we reduce the travel costs for the respective teams in difficult times, as they cover several races with one trip.”

And what about the so-called classics? “With Deutschnofen and the final in Umhausen there are two classics again. A victory in these races simply has a different meaning for the athletes. Races like this, like the floodlit finale, should not be missed in any season.”

In summary, what do you expect from the 2022/2023 World Cup season? “The last few years have not been easy because of Corona. PCR tests, entry and exit forms, mask requirements – all of this is now no longer applicable. Fans are also welcome on site again, which is why the athletes are training. You have to imagine, there are young athletes who have never competed in a World Cup race in front of an audience! This will definitely be a very special winter for them. In my opinion, the season will be a good season if it is a completely normal season.
