At the start of the World Cup: everyone is chasing Evelin Lanthaler

The last time the World Cup was hosted at Winterleiten was in the 2020/2021 season, and there was also a double World Cup back then. Local hero Michael Scheikl prevailed in both races in the men's single-seater.

The 32-year-old is one of the favorites this time too, because in the last four World Cups in Styria (Winterleiten and Mariazell) Scheikl was always at the top of the podium, and the 2020 European Champion won six of his seven World Cup victories in Styria. His biggest rivals will probably be the two South Tyroleans Alex Gruber (overall winner 2021/2022) and Patrick Pigneter, as well as the reigning world champion Thomas Kammerlander (Austria).

In the women's single-seater, Evelin Lanthaler from the Passeier Valley is the top favorite. The series winner has won every race on Winterleiten since 2018. The South Tyrolean currently has 37 World Cup victories in total. The only one who has been able to prevail against Lanthaler in recent years is her teammate Greta Pinggera from Laas. The coaches are looking forward to the performances of the “young wild ones” Lisa Walch (Germany) and Riccarda Ruetz (Austria).

In the doubles, the role of favorite is also clearly divided: South Tyrolean Patrick Pigneter/Florian Clara have been the measure of all things with their 65 World Cup victories for over 10 years. Their teammates Patrick Lambacher/Matthias Lambacher and the Austrians Fabian Achenrainer/Miguel Brugger act in the outsider role.

The last eliminator took place in January 2021 in Passeier, at which time Lanthaler, Kammerlander and Pigneter/Clara were included in the list of winners.

The new season in the natural track tobogganing World Cup begins with training on Thursday at Winterleiten (Austria). With the Eliminator (formerly the pursuer) on Sunday, the first racing weekend in Styria comes to an end with a double whammy.
