Carmen Planötscher celebrates a sensational victory on the Seiser Alm

It was not the Russian series winner Ekatharina Lavrentjeva, who had already been eliminated in the quarter-finals after a false start, but 17-year-old Carmen Planötscher who secured victory in the women's race in the unusual parallel format of the World Cup in natural track tobogganing on Sunday evening.

There was also a surprise victory among the men. The Austrian Thomas Kammerlander prevailed in the final against his compatriot Michael Scheikl. Patrick Pigneter, who won the doubles competition with Florian Clara on Saturday, came fourth. In the small final he lost to Florian Breitenberger from Ultimo.

Carmen Planötscher's victory in the women's race was sensational. She was only competing in her third World Cup race and her best placement so far was eighth place. “Incredible,” said the tobogganer from Fiè, commenting on her first World Cup victory. “I was nervous, but somehow it always worked out. “I can’t believe it myself,” said the sports student from Mals. In what was only her third World Cup race, she actually had very modest goals: “I wanted to qualify for the World Cup and improve on my best World Cup result to date, eighth place in Valdaora.”

Planötscher was the only South Tyrolean to make it into the top eight. The two higher ranked Evelin Landthaler (Passeier) and Greta Pinggera (Laas) were already eliminated in the round of 16. Planötscher advanced to the final thanks to victories over the Austrian Theresa Maurer and the Russian Ludmila Aksenenko.

There she met the Austrian Tina Unterberger, who had prevailed in the semi-finals against the Russian Lavrentjeva conqueror Maria Kamarevtseva. The decisive factor in the final was a false start by Unterberger, which cost her a penalty of one and a half seconds. In the second run, Planötscher confidently defended his lead. In the small final, Ludmila Aksenenko beat her compatriot Maria Kamarevtseva. For Ekatharina Lavrentjeva, a series of 13 victories en suite came to an end on Sunday.

The preliminary decision for the men came in the semi-finals, where Thomas Kammerlander had the upper hand against the favorite and local hero Patrick Pigneter after the two runs. In the second final, Florian Breitenberger lost to the strong Austrian Michael Scheikel, winner of the qualification at lunchtime.

However, Scheikel had no chance against his compatriot Thomas Kammerlander in the final. Breitenberger won the South Tyrolean small final thanks to a false start from Patrick Pigneter. Breitenberger was on the podium for the first time in six years.
