The natural track toboggans are ready: season presented

After the corona-related adjustments last season, the 2021/2022 racing calendar is once again a “real” racing calendar and has some interesting innovations. The FIL World Cup in luge on natural track begins in Umhausen (AUT) from January 7th - 9th, 2022. The 2021 World Cup location was previously known as the venue for the floodlit World Cup final. This will be followed immediately by the second World Cup in Umhausen from January 14th to 16th. “In recent years we have often had to contend with unpredictable weather in December. By starting later in January, we will avoid these problems. It is important for us that we start with a real bang,” explained FIL Vice President and Natural Track Coordinator Peter Knauseder at the online press conference. On the last two weekends in January, the World Cup entourage continues to Vatra Dornei (ROU) and Deutschnofen (ITA). While Vatra Dornei was removed from the calendar last season due to the pandemic, Deutschnofen did not apply as a venue in 2021. After the European Championships in Laas/Lasa (ITA) on the second weekend in February, the World Cup team will then head to Styria (AUT). Mariazell is celebrating a comeback in the World Cup calendar after the 2018/2019 season after the races in January 2019 had to be moved to Winterleiten (AUT) due to the immense amounts of new snow. In the last week of February, the World Cup enters the home stretch. There are two races on the program in the Russian capital Moscow (February 24th - 27th). After the classic World Cup, the final on Sunday will be the only eliminator (former pursuer). Unless the overall winners are determined early, they will be chosen in the eliminator format for the first time. Michael Scheikl and Thomas Kammerlander (both AUT), the reigning overall World Cup winner and the reigning world champion, were present at the press conference. “I was always the hunter, this time I am the hunted. “I hope that I can be at the forefront again,” said Scheikl, pointing out the unusual starting position. The last few weeks until the start of the season are all about training: “The endurance training is complete, now it’s time to ride, ride, ride. We are currently training primarily on the new track in Kühtai (AUT), the final preparation will then follow on the Grantau track in Umhausen,” explained Kammerlander. World Championship season for juniors The Junior World Cup in luge on natural track begins on December 30th - 31st, 2021 in Winterleiten (AUT), with the second stop in Latzfons (ITA) on January 5th - 6th, 2022. After a break of 15 days, the races will follow in Navis (AUT) on January 22nd - 23rd, before the World Cup finals on the Grantau-Bahn in Umhausen (AUT) on the last weekend of the month. This is not the end of the season for the young tobogganers, on the contrary. The highlight of the season is on the first weekend in February: the Junior World Championships from February 4th to 6th in Jaufental/Val di Giovo (ITA). In 2022 there will be two title fights in Italy Italy will become the hotspot for luge on natural track in the 2021/2022 season. Two title fights will be held in the host country of the 2026 Winter Olympics. The 29th European Luge Championships on natural track will be held on the “Gafair track” in Lasa. Defending champions are Michael Scheikl (AUT) in the men's singles, Evelin Lanthaler (ITA) in the women's singles and the brothers Patrick Lambacher/Matthias Lambacher (ITA) in the doubles. It is the first European Championship for Laas; Italy has previously hosted the European Luge Championships on natural track seven times (Taisten 1973, Seis 1977, Aosta 1979, Völs 1991, Moos 1997, Olang 2008 and Moos 2016). For the juniors, after the 2021 European Championships, the World Luge Championships on natural track will also take place in the Jaufental. It is the first World Cup on the “Tonnerboden-Bahn”, which was newly built a few years ago in the municipality of Ratschings, and at the same time new world champions will be crowned in all three categories. The defending champions Lisa Walch (GER) in the women's single-seater, Fabian Achenrainer (AUT) in the men's single-seater and Fabian Achenrainer/Simon Achenrainer (AUT) are no longer eligible to start in the juniors. The International Luge Federation FIL has set the course for a normal season after the 2020/2021 “Corona season”. In the 2021/2022 season, the World Cup in luge on natural track will be held in four countries. The new racing calendar for the World Cup contains some interesting innovations.
