Laas is preparing for the Junior European Championships

"We have invested a lot in this event. It will cost us 60.000 euros alone, not including the costs for adapting the track and the functional building in the finish area," announced OK boss Alois Klotz. He and his team are looking forward to February 3rd, when the first tobogganers will arrive in Lasa. Young sledders from nine nations are expected, the main contingent will certainly be Russians, Austrians and the hosts from South Tyrol, who will represent Italy.

Friday is reserved entirely for training sessions on the "Gafair" toboggan run; in the evening the supporting program begins with an "old tradition" in tobogganing on a natural track: a blessing of all athletes takes place in the Lasa parish church in order to invoke God's blessing on an event that is as accident-free as possible. Then there is an opening ceremony with the athletes moving to the village square, with shows and an official part.

There will be competitions starting on Saturday. First, the new junior European champions in the doubles competition will be crowned in Laas; on Sunday, after the second and third rounds, the winners in the individual competitions will also be announced. The winners receive very tastefully designed trophies, with the traditional use of Lasa marble in the Vinschger town. “The participants should remember our location and our event well,” emphasized Klotz. The head of the organizing committee also highlighted the commitment of various institutions and sponsors who make the major event possible. This was also emphasized by Mayor Andreas Tappeiner, who is looking forward to this great competition in his village.

South Tyroleans are certainly also favorites, although the people of Lasa also have the dream of seeing some of their young tobogganers at the start. The very attractively converted track offers great safety, but is still a challenge with its steepness, tight curves and the fast final section. Only real experts can prevail here. February 5th and 6th in Lasa will certainly be highlights of the sporting history of the pretty town.

For the juniors in the natural track sector it is the absolute highlight of the winter of 2010/11: The European Championships for the age groups of athletes born between 1991 and 1996 will take place the weekend after next in Lasa in Vinschgau. This major event has now been officially presented.
