Patrick Pigneter: “Moscow is a tough place”

The local heroes will be particularly motivated on the route in Vorobyevy Gory (in English: Sparrow Mountains) in the middle of the Russian capital. That's why it's important to beat them too. A difficult undertaking, after all the Russians showed last year that they are a power on their home track. In the doubles, two pairs made it to the podium, Ekaterina Lavrentyeva won in the women's category and there was even a double victory in the men's category.

So far this year, the races have been dominated by the South Tyrolean athletes, who were in a class of their own in the women's, men's and team competitions at the last stage in Laces. But at the race in Moscow the cards will be reshuffled; the athletes know that the conditions in Russia are different. Patrick Pigneter, men's World Cup leader, says: "Moscow is a tough place, the Russians have to be beaten there first."

The route in Moscow, where a World Cup race is being held for the second time in a row after a twelve-year break, is special in many ways: On the one hand, it is located in the middle of the city. On the other hand, the track is very short at around 520 meters. This will be just as special a challenge for the athletes as the pursuit race, which is being held in Russia for the first time this season. In this special mode - similar to Parallel Race - the aim is to defeat the respective competitor in a duel in order to advance to the next round. The last six remaining athletes are finally ranked normally again and decide on the places among themselves. It will be interesting to see who will come out on top this time.
