Patrick Pigneter remains undefeated

Pigneter celebrated his 25th World Cup victory in a single-seater and is currently flying from victory to victory: “I'm really enjoying tobogganing at the moment and everything is going perfectly. “You can feel that something is being done for the sport now and there hasn’t been such diversity for a long time,” says the South Tyrolean, who has dominated the World Cup for six years. And indeed, after the first round, athletes from five different nations were in the top ten. In the end, three Italians, Pigneter, Hannes Clara and Rudi Resch, were on the podium, closely followed by a block of four Austrians who showed a strong performance, especially in the second run. The Slovenian Pagon Ziga, the Russian Juri Talikh and the Pole Adam Jedrzejko completed the newly diverse picture of the first twelve. Hannes Clara once again took second place and was almost astonished by it: “This track with the tight curves and long straights didn't suit me at all at the 2008 season finale, but surprisingly I did well today,” says Clara. Rudi Resch pushed the Austrian Michael Scheikl off the podium with a good second run and admits: “I didn't expect a podium place, but I hoped. After all, other people make mistakes sometimes.”

For the women, Ekatharina Lavrentjeva was once again in her own league. Today she took no less than 1,71 seconds from Renate Gietl from Feldthurn. “I made a big mistake in the first run, and the second run wasn’t quite optimal either,” says the Russian. Melanie Batkowski, who had to miss the first two World Cup races, managed to jump from the hospital bed straight to the podium: “I was completely flat for two weeks. We don't know what it was exactly, the flu or an infection, but in any case it was the first time I've been on the toboggan here in three weeks," says the Tyrolean, who celebrated her 25th podium finish in the World Cup with third place. Her big goal for the season is now the European Championships in Novouralsk in mid-February, because “it will be very difficult to be at the top of the World Cup.”

The busy World Cup program in January will continue next week with the WÜRZ Energy World Cup in Nova Ponente in South Tyrol.
