Pigneter and Clara remain undefeated

Patrick Pigneter/Florian Clara celebrated their 22nd World Cup victory. But they know that they can by no means feel safe: “At the moment it's easy in the doubles and we don't have to attack at all, we can afford to drive a clean line. But with a view to the World Cup, the Russians will certainly catch up,” says Pigneter. It's not just the Russians who are gearing up to attack, Christian Schopf/Andreas Schopf, who are once again in second place, also think they have a chance of intercepting the Italian Azzurri: "We're certainly happy with the two second places in the World Cup, but our big goal is the World Cup in two weeks." says Christian Schopf. Third place went to Pavel Porshnev/Ivan Lazarev (RUS), who have not yet fully gotten their training deficit under control: “We would have needed one or two more runs to eliminate all the mistakes. But we are not dissatisfied with third place in the overall World Cup,” said Lazarev.

What was a rarity in previous years now seems to be developing into a trend: a pair of double-seaters made up of men and women. Three such pairings took part in Passeier, and the Slovenian double with Matic Nemc and Petra Dragicevic even qualified for the World Cup. The other two “mixed doubles” from Bulgaria and Italy took fifth and sixth place in the Nations Cup. The regulations of the International Luge Federation give the athletes every leeway: two women are also allowed to form a doubles pair.

Lavrentjeva leads among women

In the women's race, Ekatharina Lavrentjeva (RUS) is once again in the lead after one race, but just behind there is a group from Italy lurking for their chances in the second race: Evelin Lanthaler is in second place, only 19 hundredths behind, and they are currently sharing third place Greta Pinggera and Melanie Schwarz. In sensational fifth place is the fourteen-year-old Theresa Maurer (GER), who is not related to Michaela (7th after the first run) and Georg Maurer.

South Tyrolean double victory in the Nations Cup

Carmen Planötscher won the women's Nations Cup ahead of her teammate Sara Bachmann and the Austrian Marlies Wagner. In the doubles there was an Austrian double victory with Thomas Schopf/Andreas Schöpf at the top ahead of Christian Schatz/Gerhard Mühlbacher. Pavel Silin/Iwan Rodin (RUS) took third place.

The men completed the qualification run this Saturday. Alex Gruber and Rudi Resch prevailed among the South Tyroleans and will start in the World Cup alongside the qualified Patrick Pigneter and Hannes Clara. Anton Blasbichler fell by the wayside this time.

Tomorrow, Sunday, the men will compete in both World Cup races and the Nations Cup. For the women, the decision will be made in the second World Cup race from around 11 a.m.
