Russian opening victory at the World Cup in Valdaora

Even a fall in training on Friday couldn't slow Porshnev-Lazarev. After two runs they won with a wafer-thin lead of eight hundredths of a second over the South Tyrolean Pigneter/Clara. The two Austrians Christian Schatz and Gerhard Mühlbacher made it to third place, just like in Latzfons. The second local duo around Hannes Clara and Stefan Gruber took sixth place. They were 1,48 seconds behind.

On Sunday decision in the single-seater Women and men each took part in one race this Saturday, with the second races following Sunday. The men's final is set to be an exciting one, as no less than nine starters are ranked within just 78 hundredths of a second. Patrick Pigneter is only seven hundredths ahead of Hannes Clara. Behind them are two other South Tyroleans, Alex Greuber and Florian Clara. The Russian Stanislav Kovshik in fifth place and the Canadian Kaj Johnson, who came 13th and left the reigning world champion Gerald Kammerlander (AUT) behind him, made people sit up and take notice. Johnson is fighting for the places with the veterans Gernot Schwab and Robert Batkowski. In the women's race, the Russian Ekatharina Lavrentjeva is leading after the first run, ahead of the two South Tyroleans Renate Gietl (+0,84) and Melanie Schwarz (+1,25).

Five teams have entered the team competition, which is being held for the first time as part of a World Cup race. Unlike World and European Championships, each nation is only allowed to field one team. Mixed teams from two nations are also not permitted here.
