Russia dominates World Cup races in Umhausen

Ekatharina Lavrentjeva triumphed once again in the women's race and extended her winning streak to nine races in a row. She only has her own record to beat; in the 2004/05 to 2006/07 seasons she won eleven World Cup races in a row. She should still have reserves for the next races once she has recovered from her cold. “I’m going to go to the hotel now and sleep,” she said after her success. “I had a high fever two days ago, I didn’t eat anything and the track in Umhausen is always a bit difficult for me anyway.” Melanie Schwarz was happy about the best World Cup placement of her career in second place: “I tried to stay relaxed, but of course there was a lot of tension before the second run, because after all it was about my best World Cup placement so far. I am completely satisfied and it went well. “I still had to qualify on Friday, but I’m slowly getting used to it,” said the Vinschger native, who qualified for the second time in a row for the one remaining World Cup starting place alongside the two seeds – currently Evelin Lanthaler and Greta Pinggera. Third came Evelin Lanthaler, who, with consistent performances, is in second place in the overall World Cup – first place behind Lavrentjeva – and is traveling to the World Cup in Deutschnofen with great expectations. “I celebrated my first podium finish in the World Cup there and things went well at the Junior World Championships,” says the 2010 Junior World Champion.

Pigneter/Clara in the doubles in second place In the doubles, the reigning world champions Pavel Porshnev/Ivan Lazarev seem to be getting into shape just in time to defend their title. “The first run was perfect, in the second run we braked too early in two or three corners, our performance is not yet completely stable,” analyzed Lazarev self-critically, but added: “Our material is much better now. This success here was a catalyst for the World Championships.” Patrick Pigneter/Florian Clara, who had to settle for second place in today’s race, are also expecting an exciting duel at the World Championships in Deutschnofen. “The Russians drove well, we made small mistakes, it will be a nice fight in Deutschnofen and we will definitely risk more there,” says Florian Clara. Christian Schopf/Andreas Schopf are happy about their first podium place in Umhausen.

In an exciting finish, Russia also won the team competition. Ekatharina Lavrentjeva, Stanislav Koshniv and Pavel Porshnev/Ivan Lazarev defeated Italy with Melanie Schwarz, Hannes Clara and Patrick Pigneter/Florian Clara, with the Italian doubles taking the chance for revenge and achieving the best time. However, Lavrentjeva gained enough of a lead to secure first place. The team from Austria with Christina Götschl, Thomas Kammerlander and Christian Schopf/Andreas Schopf came third ahead of the teams from Germany, Poland and Bulgaria.

In the doubles Nations Cup, the Austrians Thomas Schopf/Andreas Schöpf won ahead of the Russians Pavel Silin/Iwan Rodin and Stanislav Kovshik/Ilya Tarasov. The World Cup will now continue in Kindberg (AUT) in two weeks. Next week, from January 24th to 27th, the 19th FIL World Championships will take place in Deutschnofen.

Russia dominates World Cup races in Umhausen

After Patrick Pigneter's victory in the single-seater on Saturday, the Russians dominated the second day of competition at the Natural Track Luge World Cup in Umhausen today. First places went to Russia in both the women's competition and the doubles and team competition.
