Overall World Cup victory for Pigneter/Clara

“During training and the first run things weren’t going so well and we were thinking about how we could get close to the top times. We didn't have any major mistakes, we couldn't change anything in the material, we made the most changes in our heads. In the second run it was all or nothing. We completed the finish curve like never before in a double-seater,” said Pigneter, who has now won the double-seater and single-seater World Cups in one season.

“After the World Cup, the overall World Cup was our big goal and it’s nice that it was exciting until the end,” said Florian Clara. With their victory in Olang, Pigneter/Clara not only sealed their fourth victory in a row in the overall World Cup, but also drew level with Reinhard Beer/Herbert Kögl (AUT), who have so far topped the all-time best list with 18 victories. The Austrians, who have already ended their careers, have a total of 44 podium places (18-17-9), Pigneter/Clara have 24 (18-5-1).

Christian Schatz/Gerhard Mühlbacher (AUT), who were still in the lead after the first run, were narrowly defeated. “We are still satisfied, you don’t have to be ashamed if you are eight hundredths behind the winners,” said Schatz. However, the two of them are already thinking about the future: “The Schatz/Mühlbacher pairing has proven itself for six years and will also be there next year. We will immediately start working on the next generation of sleds for next season. If you don’t do anything for a few weeks, you’ll be miles away.”

The defeated Russians Pavel Porschnev/Ivan Lazarev, who came in third place a hundredth of a second behind Schatz/Mühlbacher, are also thinking about the future. “It's already a tradition that we come second in the overall World Cup, next year we want to win again,” said Lazarev. However, the two lost the World Cup two weeks ago in Unterammergau, where they only came sixth, said Lazarev: “It was a difficult starting situation for us today. We had to win and Pigneter/Clara couldn’t finish better than third.” The women have already completed their first race, in which Renate Gietl (ITA) is in the lead ahead of Ekatharina Lavrentjeva (RUS) and Melanie Batkowski.
