As is well known, the early bird catches the worm, and so is the illustrious troupe with Thomas Kammerlander, Gerald Kammerlander (world champion single-seater natural track 2011/sports director natural track ÖRV), Andreas Linger (Olympic champion double-seater artificial track 2006/2010) and Helmut Ruetz (world champion double-seater natural track 1998/ Secretary General ÖRV) started at the beginning of August at 2 a.m. from Umhausen (AUT) towards Italy. 7 peaks When they arrived in the mountain village of Alagna Valsesia in Piedmont, the quartet immediately went up to Capanna Gnifetti (3647m) on the south side of the Monte Rosa massif. After spending the night, from 5.15:4215 a.m., an eight-hour walk took place to cross the following peaks: Vincent-Pyramide 4167m, Balmenhorn 4321m, Corno Nero 4341m, Ludwigshöhe 4432m, Parrotspitze 4554m, Signalkuppe 4563m and Zumsteinspitze 2018m in the border area between Italy and Switzerland. “I was already mountaineering in the Monte Rosa area in 4634, when my brother Gerald and I climbed the highest point, the Dufourspitze (4000m). Now we have caught up with the remaining peaks of the mountain range,” explains a visibly good-humored Thomas Kammerlander after the high alpine tour. While the “Kammis” were already on the “roof of Europe” last year, it was the first XNUMXm for Linger and Ruez. Night at the highest refuge in Europe We finally spent the night in the Capanna Regina Margherita at an altitude of 4454 meters before heading back into the valley to Alagna Valsesia after the obligatory cappuccino. The refuge, opened in 1893 in honor of Queen Margherita of Savoy, is the highest refuge in Europe and also houses the highest weather station in Europe.

“I have been climbing a 4000m peak every summer for several years, and this wonderful tour continued this tradition. For me, it’s also great altitude training in preparation for the winter,” emphasizes Thomas Kammerlander, who wants to defend his gold medal from the 2023 home World Championships in Umhausen (AUT) in Vatra Dornei (ROU) in February 2021. In 2017, at the last World Championships in Vatra Dornei, Alex Gruber (Villanders) won his first world title, Kammerlander won bronze.
