World champion Renate Gietl surprisingly ends her career

Gietl is one of the greats in luge on natural tracks. She won a total of 9 medals at the World Championships, four of which were gold. In 2005 she won the overall World Cup, then she came second seven times behind the Russian Ekaterina Lavrentyeva.

She competed in her first World Cup race in the 1999/2000 season and achieved her first podium finish in the first year with second place in Stein an der Enns. In total there were 49 podium finishes in her career. Gietl won 15 World Cup races, the first in Hüttau in 2002 and the last in Olang in February 2011.

Renate Gietl always performed particularly well at world championships. In six participations, she only remained without a medal in 2003 in Železniki. She has been unbeaten at the World Championships for three years, winning gold in both the single-seater and the team competition (with Anton Blasbichler, Patrick Pigneter and Florian Clara) in 2009 in Moos in Passeier (three hundredths of a second ahead of Lavrentjewa) and in 2011 in Umhausen.
