Kerschbaumer and Lechner triumph in Schlanders - All results

After a two-year break, the MTB Night Race returned to South Tyrol, and the organizers of ASV Kortsch-Raiffeisen, led by Andreas Gemassmer and Edmund Telser, did not disappoint expectations. The rain tried to play a bad trick on the event in Upper Vinschgau, but the only people who really “played” for over an hour were the MTB champions on the 2,8 km long, properly cordoned off and illuminated route through the Place, with some really difficult sections right near the historic town center.

Kerschbaumer's start wasn't the best, he himself admitted that at the finish, and after the first of the eight laps the Italian Tony Longo was at the head of the group ahead of the Swiss U23 world champion Thomas Litscher and the strong Alexander Gehbauer from Austria. The route first led over asphalt at the exit from the centrally located Dammlplatz, then followed a winding section over grass and gravel on the edge of the Schlandraunbach, a staircase on which the bike had to be carried, a long and slippery climb over cobblestones before it again between the houses over a steep curve to the main square, where a small bridge and a few artificial elevations were a pure joy for spectators and drivers. Through narrow streets, gates and the playground we then went back to the main road towards the finish, where Kerschbaumer arrived first on the third lap, while Litscher lost a lot of ground and Longo had to struggle with a defect in the gears From then on, he screwed up most of the race.

As the laps progressed, the driver of the TX Active Bianchi Team already seemed to have first place firmly in his hands, while Gehbauer and Franz Hofer fought an exciting duel behind him, which only decided in favor of the Carinthian in the last lap, while Hofer For better or for worse, had to deal with a chain that wasn't playing along. Nevertheless, the Scott team driver ultimately managed third place ahead of Longo and the other South Tyrolean Johannes Schweiggl. Also interesting was the race of the junior from Neumarkt (BZ) Beltain Schmid, who was even second in the first lap, then always raced among the best and in the end was the best junior of the day.

Colnago five-fold victory among women

In the women's race, team-mates Lechner and Schneitter were right at the front in this race, which was a “home game” for both of them, as the Colnago Team Color South Tyrol comes from Silandro. Both always rode directly behind each other, and in the end the South Tyrolean and Italian XC champion won the MTB Night Race for the 5th time in a row. Her Swiss rival deserves a lot of credit, however, because the race in Schlanders was the first after a bad accident two months ago at the World Cup. The young Julia Innerhofer took third place in the elite race, but it is also worth mentioning the great performance of the national trainer Paola Pezzo, who was third for a large part of the race and in the end won the Master Women's category with one lap less.

Also at the start yesterday were the men's national coach Hubert Pallhuber and the third Italian "Olympian" in a few weeks Marco Aurelio Fontana, who kept his promise to come, but preferred not to have his training for London jeopardized by a wet surface bring.

The youth, master and VIP races with ski and snowboard champions also took place yesterday afternoon. Here, too, there were many participants and many spectators in the streets of Schlanders, which celebrated the return of the MTB Night Race with incredible enthusiasm after a two-year break.

The 2012 MTB Night Race was also captured by the RAI television cameras and a 30-minute recap will be shown on Rai Sport 18 on July 18.00th from 2 p.m.
