Veronika Widmann: Corona break in England

After the world cycling association UCI recently canceled the World Cups planned for May, the World Cup in Fort William, Scotland, which was supposed to take place on June 6th and 7th, was also canceled on Tuesday. This means that the mountain bike season for downhillers probably starts at the earliest with the World Cup stage in Andorra (June 19th to 21st). But this too is still up in the air. “Hopefully everything will get better soon,” emphasizes Veronika Widmann. She is currently in the UK and is sort of stuck in England, southeast of London.

“But we’re doing well here,” she reports. A few weeks ago she set off for England, among other things to do photo shoots for her new team Flow Style Racing. Her partner Harry Molloy, who works as a manager for the Flow Style team and also competes in races himself, also comes from England. Widmann currently lives with him in the town of Tunbridge Wells, which has a population of 60.000. Training at home is the order of the day At the moment it is hardly possible to get a flight away from the British Isles. “It's all very difficult. That’s why we’re staying here for now,” said the 27-year-old. The situation in England has also deteriorated dramatically in recent weeks. There is not yet a total curfew among the British, but Widmann trains primarily at home.

Outdoor sports are hard to think about at the moment. For Widmann, training at home is the most important thing.

If the MTB season starts in the coming months, “Vroni” wants to be ready again and be at the forefront. Last year she made it onto the podium for the first time in third place at the last race in Snowshoe (USA) and also took third place in the overall World Cup. “I would like to build on these results,” says Widmann.

Downhill sport is not yet an Olympic discipline. The highlight of the season will take place on September 5th and 6th with the World Championships in Leogang, Austria. Widmann is also part of the extended circle of medal candidates and would like to win her first World Cup medal.
