Marathon World Cup: 217 elite riders will fight for precious metal on Saturday

Germany has the largest contingent of men with 23 athletes, followed by hosts Italy (14), Switzerland and France (12), Spain (10) and Austria with seven participants. For the women, Germany also makes up the majority of the starting field with 16 World Cup participants. Behind them are Switzerland (10), Austria (6) and Italy with two participants (Elena Gaddoni and Daniela Veronesi).

Among the most dazzling athletes competing in Val Gardena are the Olympic champions Jaroslav Kuhlhavý (Czech Republic), Gunn-Rita Dahle Flesjå (NOR) and Sabine Spitz (D); then the world champions Christoph Sauser (CH), Annika Langvad (DK), Esther Süss CH), Alban Lakata (AUT), Periklis Ilias (GRE), Massimo Debertolis (ITA) and Roel Paulissen (BEL).

To become world champion around the Sella massif in the Dolomites, you need strength, endurance, discipline, driving technique and patience. All top athletes agree on this. Race director and route manager Peter Runggaldier has created all the necessary conditions so that the athletes can fully exploit their potential on the routes over 87km/4.700 hm (men) and 60 km/3.400 hm (women).

The men's marathon World Cup route leads from Wolkenstein (1563 meters) along a forest and gravel road 5,6 km up to the mountain station of the Dantercepies cable car (2.298 meters). Then it goes down to Gardena Pass and on to Corvara, where the next long climb to the Pralongià hut (2.157m) awaits the riders. The bikers reach the Campolongo pass via the high mountain pastures of Alta Badia, from where they descend directly to Arabba. Shortly after the village, the most difficult and feared climb, “Ornella”, begins at 1000 meters in altitude to the highest point of the event, the Sourasass (2.351m). The route then crosses single trails to the Pordoi Pass before the descent to Canazei begins. We continue to Campitello and through the Duron Valley uphill to Mahlknechtjoch. The participants reach their destination in Wolkenstein via the Seiser Alm and Monte Pana. 69.9% of the route is off-road, 16.8% is on single trails and only 13.3% is on roads. On their way from the start to the finish, the men cross the Gardena Pass, the Campolongo Pass, the Pordoi Pass and the Mahlknecht Pass.

The women's marathon world championship route differs significantly from that of the men: first in Alta Badia, where they have to cover around 7 km more than their male colleagues between Corvara, Piz Sorega and Pralongià. In Arabba, in contrast to the men's course on ski slopes and single trails, the course then leads directly to the Pordoi Pass, where both routes unite again. Before Canazei, the women have to tackle their last long climb to the Sella Pass before descending to the finish in Wolkenstein. 55,5% of the route is off-road, 35,7% is on single trails and only 8,8% is on the road. The ladies cross four Dolomite passes: Gardena Pass, Campolongo Pass, Pordoi Pass and Sella Pass. At 2.298 meters, the Gardena Pass is the highest point on Dantercepies.

The world champion is scheduled to arrive at Nivesplatz in Wolkenstein at 11 a.m. and the new world champion is scheduled to cross the finish line at 11.50:XNUMX a.m. The official UCI awards ceremony will then take place at the Medal Plaza in Wolkenstein.
