South Tyrol Ultrarace: The starting signal will be fired in 50 days

The extreme mountain run in the Sarntal Alps along the Horseshoe Tour takes place from July 26th to 28th. In order for everything to run smoothly in exactly 50 days, it takes many hands to do their work conscientiously. More than 150 volunteers from a total of five clubs from the various areas through which the South Tyrol Ultrarace will run will ensure that the event runs smoothly under the route coordination of Walter Perkmann. The ASC Sarntal, which is a partner club for extreme mountain running, supports the event with six sections: bowling, running enthusiasts, cycling, football, skiing and cross-country skiing. The Oberbozen Volunteer Fire Department, ASV Villanders, ASC Mölten, ASC Vöran, AVS Ortsgruppe Sarntal and ASV Jenesien are also involved in this sports project.

“There are ten sections of the route that need to be staffed. Thanks to the great support of 12 clubs, we have adequately occupied all posts along the route. In addition, it is important to have enough helpers - there will be more than 60 - in the start and finish area. Here, too, we can rely on volunteers from all participating clubs. On behalf of the organizing committee, I would like to thank all the volunteers for their support. Without their help it would not be possible to set up such a mammoth project,” says OC boss Josef Günther Mair from GRW Sarntal.

While the organizer is working at full speed to ensure everything runs smoothly, registrations for the South Tyrol Ultrarace are still progressing slowly. So far, 110 athletes have registered for the extreme mountain run in the Sarntal Alps. “We hear from many runners that they want to take part in the South Tyrol Ultrarace but have not yet registered. The registration window is open until one week before the race, i.e. until July 19th. That's why we're already assuming that the number of participants will skyrocket," says OC boss Josef Günther Mair.

The extreme mountain run starts on July 26th at 22 p.m. at Waltherplatz in Bolzano. From the state capital it goes over the Rittner Horn to the Sarner Scharte, on to the Latzfonser Kreuz and over the Fahnerscharten hut to the Penser Joch. As soon as the athletes get there, they have 60 kilometers in their legs - and have therefore covered half of the distance. The transition zone for the relay teams is also located at the 2211 meter high pass crossing. Because the South Tyrol Ultra Race can not only be completed alone, but also by teams of two.

The second part of the highly selective route, which requires the athletes to be sure-footed and not afraid of heights, but also absolute physical and psychological fitness, takes place along narrow trails with rapid ascents and descents over the Scree Joch to the Oberberg, Unterberg, Alpler Nieder and the Hirzer Hütte . From there the athletes have to go to the highest point of the race, namely the Obere Scharte (2.698 m) below the Hirzer. At 2.781 meters, the Hirzer is the highest peak in the Sarntal Alps.

Now the participants of the South Tyrol Ultrarace can expect a long descent, past Lake Kratzberger for lunch, before leisurely going up and down, past the Stoanernen Mandln, Langfenn to the town of Jenesien. Finally, the mountain runners can look forward to the rapid descent to the finish on the Talferwiesen in Bolzano, where the prize distribution in the festival tent is on the program on Sunday, July 28th from 13 p.m.
