Official: Napoli fires Mazzarri – Slovakia coach takes over

Walter Mazzarri's short era as Napoli coach 2.0 is over. The current national coach of Slovakia will take over for the 62-year-old.

Mazzarri managed Napoli for 182 competitive games between 2009 and 2013. However, the second era has now failed after just 12 Serie A games. Mazzarri has no longer been Napoli coach since Monday evening.

Francesco Calzona will take over for Mazzarri. The 55-year-old is the current national coach of Slovakia and managed to qualify for the 2024 European Championship with the team led by PSG star Milan Skriniar. Calzona was previously assistant coach to Maurizio Sarri (2015 – 2018) and Luciano Spalletti (2021/22) at Napoli. A preferred candidate as assistant coach was Marek Hamsik, but the Slovakian will return to Naples (at least not immediately).
