Our columnist Sigi Heinrich worked with Andy Brehme for a month during the 1998 World Cup in France. He deliberately waited a few days after the news of his death to look back emotionally and to review his time with Andy in excerpts.

Our boss at Eurosport at the time was English. “I want, no, I need a name on our team for the World Cup,” he said in a meeting. That was late spring 1998. But who did I think he would accept? It should be outstanding. When I told him I knew Andy Brehme, the topic was over. The goalscorer from Rome, the penalty king. Brehme.
