Bolzano ice hockey fireworks fizzle out in the fog

Because of New Year's magic! HCB Südtirol Alperia suffered a tough defeat against Innsbruck at the start of the new ice hockey year. The Foxes and their 3.500 fans quickly identified the scapegoat.

Just as the many New Year's Eve rockets fizzled out in the thick clouds of fog over the Bolzano valley last night, the Foxes' first appearance of the new calendar year also came to a colorless end a few hours later. In the smoke of the Bengal fires that the fans lit at the start of the game, they slipped to a 2-4 defeat against the in-form Innsbruck Haie.

Was it New Year's Eve? Was it the mammoth program at the turn of the year? Or was the day's form simply not right? The fact is that HC Bozen delivered a tired performance on New Year's Eve. The Hanlon team's game seemed disjointed, and the players themselves seemed weak and irritable.

Only occasionally did the playful class that had lifted the HCB from the bottom of the table to the top positions in the past few weeks shine through. Whenever the people of Bolzano began to really build up a threat, they were thwarted by the strong attacking force of Innsbruck or the referees who led the game without a clear line.

The key scenes

The assister scoresDefender Vandane is Bozen's best assist man with 19 assists. But he shows that he can do it himself with a blueliner in minute 3 that somehow finds its way into the goal. It is Vandane's 9th points scorer in the most recent 7 games.
Disoriented foxesInnsbruck turns the tables in the starting third: Rockwood completes a textbook counterattack (10th), Green scores with a slap shot (14th). The HCB defense is not in the picture for both goals. Likewise with Mackin making it 1:3, when he coldly took advantage of the disorder in Bolzano's outnumbered game (36'). Just 8 seconds earlier, Frigo had to go to the penalty box for insulting the referee.
Mantenuto, so beautifulIt's the best scene of the game: Mantenuto takes apart the entire Innsbruck defense, breaks it down into its individual parts with wild hooks and impressive stick handling and then passes to Parlett. He completes the work of art with a shot into the top corner (38th).
Aluminum here, aluminum thereInnsbruck is better in the final third, but fails either because of the aluminum or because of Svedberg's leg guards. On the other side, Bozen's Thomas only hits the crossbar. Ex-NHL player Roy made the decision with an empty net goal seconds before the end.

Over the course of the 60 minutes of play, the referees repeatedly drew the ire of the extremely nervous HCB cracks and the loud fans. They dedicated a provocative banner to main referee Kristijan Nikolic after the final siren. He responded with a casual gesture and disappeared into the catacombs with a smile on his face. Afterwards it was closing time in the Sparkasse Arena.

Derby dress rehearsal on Wednesday

Due to this defeat, Bolzano (for the time being) loses touch with the top ranks. However, Daniel Frank & Co. have the chance to make amends on Wednesday in Feldkirch. The struggling and now play-free HC Pustertal welcomes Asiago at the same time. On Epiphany, the two big South Tyrolean rivals will face each other in the third derby of the season in the Bozner Sparkasse Arena.
