Brunner and Thaler win Kalterersee half marathon - all results

In its sixth year, the Lake Kaltern Half Marathon has established itself as the second largest 21 km race in South Tyrol. 877 registered and 769 finishers (in 2010 there were 629) ensured a clear record number of participants.

South Tyrolean successes have so far been few and far between at the Kalterer bathing lake. Petra Pircher was the only one to win in 2009. So far there have only been Moroccan winners among the men. Today, however, the South Tyroleans dominated.

Rudi Brunner led from the first meter. With an average mileage of 3:00 minutes, he ran ahead of his competitors. At the halfway point of the race after the first lap of the lake, the 37-year-old from Meran was already leading by over a minute.

“I wanted to prevent the competition from benefiting from my speed work and I succeeded,” said Brunner happily. On the second half of the route, Brunner had to pay tribute to the high temperatures (over 20 degrees) along the route, which was heavily exposed to the sun. In 1:11:07 he was well above the time of the previous winners.

However, his victory was never in danger, as second-placed Alessandro Degasperi was 1:38 minutes behind, and third-placed Adriano Pinamonti was even more than two minutes behind. With this success, Brunner also took the lead in the top 7 overall ranking after two of seven races. "I trained very diligently and constantly over the winter and am therefore in very good shape. I'm already looking forward to the half marathon in Merano," said Brunner.

In the women's race, Edeltraud Thaler ran towards an unchallenged victory. The 45-year-old mountain running specialist was always in the lead and ultimately won in 1:24:56. "I wasn't quite as fast this year as last year, but given the high temperatures it went perfectly," said Thaler happily. Petra Pircher also had a good race. The runner-up time of 1:25:38 was at least faster than when she won in 2009. On the second lap, Pircher overtook Gertraud Höllrigl, the top 7 overall winner from the previous year. The fastest handbiker this year was Raimund Thaler.

For Brunner and Thaler, the success in Kaltern was a first. Brunner has already won the half marathon in Vienna, but both of them were still waiting for their first taste of success at one of the big fun runs in South Tyrol. Alex Rabensteiner from SG Eisacktal and Warsame Dahir (Atl. Lonato) won the panoramic run (250 participants) over 10,55 km. Last year the winner of the Panorama Run was Rudi Brunner.

Not only were the winners happy, but also the organizer: "A new participant record is always a great thing for an organizer," says Frieda Viertler, President of the South Tyrolean Running Club. Viertler cited membership in the Top7 running series, the good weather, the panorama and the good organization as reasons for the unexpected boom. In addition, for many people the date is ideal as the first showdown in spring.

The Kalterersee half marathon was the second stage of the Top7 running series, which includes the most important medium and long-distance races in South Tyrol. Last year there were more than 5000 participants. The next stop is the spring half marathon Meran - Lagundo on May 1st.
