Dlugosz and Confortola win 18th South Tyrol Drei Zinnen Alpine Run

Once again in great weather, namely bright sunshine and almost cloudless skies, one of the most beautiful mountain runs in the world started on Saturday at 10 a.m. in Sexten with a total of 1000 participants. In the men's race, a leading group of six broke away in the first few kilometers, including Andrzej Dlugosz from Poland, Cesare Maestri from Trentino, Filippo Barizza from Veneto, Gerd Frick from Merano, Hannes Perkmann from Sarntal and Andrea Debiasi (Trentino). The sextet was still relatively compact at the valley end hut after around eight kilometers.

On the section to the Zsigmondy Hut, Dlugosz gained a lead of around a minute over Maestri and Perkmann. The 37-year-old from Rytro maintained this lead until the finish at the Drei Zinnen Hut, which Dlugosz reached first after 1:31.01 hours. Dlugosz took part in the South Tyrol Drei Zinnen Alpine Run for the third time and was now able to win the mountain run for the first time.

Two youngsters on the podium

Cesare Maestri (Atletica Valli Bergamasche Leffe) took second place. The 22-year-old from Bolbeno, who is a member of the Italian national mountain running team and took part in the World Championships in 2014, needed 17,5:1350 hours for the 1 kilometers with 32.02 meters of altitude. The podium was completed by Hannes Perkmann (Sportler Team), like Maestri, born in 1993. The best South Tyrolean participant crossed the finish line after 1:33.15 hours and was therefore 38 seconds faster than his Sarnen compatriot Martin Stofner (ASC Sarntal), who came fourth. Filippo Barizza ended up in fifth place. The 34-year-old from Mirano has taken part in all 18 editions of the South Tyrol Drei Zinnen Alpine Run. Gerd Frick had to be content with seventh place.

Confortola and Tschurtschenthaler fall

In the women's race there was a head-to-head race between Antonella Confortola and Agnes Tschurtschenthaler. At first it looked as if the 33-year-old from Sexten could win her home race. The flat initial part of the route in particular suited the characteristics of the Puster woman. But even on the climbs, she was able to maintain a lead of around a minute over Confortola, which she had gained between the valley end hut and the Zsigmondy hut.

On the climb to the Büllelejochhütte, Confortola was able to catch up and overtake Tschurtschenthaler on the subsequent descent because the South Tyrolean fell after being careless. But the 39-year-old from Fiemme Valley couldn't avoid a fall, which couldn't stop her from winning her third victory at the South Tyrol Drei Zinnen Alpine Run. Antonella Confortola won in 1:48.06 hours, Tschurtschenthaler came second, 56 seconds behind, but had to be taken to hospital with a knee injury after the race.

Elena Casaro from Dobbiaco took third place, leaving Edeltraud Thaler behind in the fight for the podium with a time of 1:56.12 hours. The 50-year-old from Lanan was 26 seconds slower than the woman from Puster who was four years younger. Austrian Sibylle Schild took fifth place in the classification, also staying under the two-hour mark in 1:58.47 hours.

On Sunday the Mini Drei Zinnen Alpine Run

In total, almost 1000 finishers reached the finish, including the former top ski racer Marco Buechel from Liechtenstein, the Red Bull X-Alps participant Pascal Purin from Austria and the German Olympic rowing champion Tim Grohmann. The South Tyrol Drei Zinnen Alpine Run has been sold out since the beginning of September with 1000 participants. In the past few days, the race management had received almost 500 additional requests to start, but these were no longer accepted for logistical reasons.

The three-day running spectacle in Sexten concludes with the Mini Drei Zinnen Alpine Run on Sunday morning. From 10 a.m., children and young people up to the age of 18 will be introduced to the fascination of mountain running.
