Tschurtschenthaler and Hofer win the South Tyrolean Erdäpfllauf

The 24th edition of the South Tyrolean Erdäpfllauf ended on Saturday evening with the same winners as a year ago. Agnes Tschurtschenthaler and Michael Hofer prevailed on the 17,1 kilometers from Bruneck to Sand in Taufers.

While it was Hofer's second success at the Erdäpfllauf, with her seventh victory, Tschurtschenthaler is now the record winner together with Renate Rungger. The exceptional Sesto runner complained of slight intestinal problems, as she admitted after the race. “I even had to make two stops, but I still managed to grit my teeth and come first. Today it was very warm and the air was stagnant, so it was anything but an easy race,” analyzed Tschurtschenthaler. 1:06.02 hours after the starting signal at the town hall square in Bruneck, she crossed the finish line next to the festival square in Sand in Taufers, just under two and a half minutes ahead of the second-placed Sarah Giomi from Bolzano (1:08.38 hours), who is still the overall lead in the Top7. running series.

Tschurtschenthaler not only celebrated her third victory in a row at the Erdäpfllauf, but also her seventh overall at the popular run in the Puster Valley, overtaking South Tyrolean running legend Renate Rungger as the record winner. “The fact that I am the record winner with her makes me very proud. Rungger has dominated this race for many years,” she said happily. Arianna Lutteri from Rovereto came third with a time of 1:08.49 hours.

Michael Hofer improves his time from last year

The men's victory also went to the same winner as in the 23rd edition a year ago. Michael Hofer from Deutschnofen was also unbeatable for the competition in 2023. With a time of 57.03 minutes, he beat his winning time from last year by almost half a minute. “I'm in good shape at the moment, I gave it my best today and I'm very happy that I won. The competition was very strong today, many ran top times. “I would have imagined it would have been even hotter today, but since the sun soon disappeared behind the clouds, it was bearable,” said Hofer after the race.

In fact, he was “only” 48 seconds ahead of second-placed Peter Lanziner from Truden. Lanziner, who won the Erdäpfllauf three times in a row from 2014 to 2016, crossed the finish line after 57.51 minutes. The overall leader of the men's Top7 ranking, Khalid Jbari from Bolzano, came in third with a time of 59.19 minutes.

Positive conclusion

Before the participants of the main and just-for-fun run as well as the two-person relay arrived in Sand in Taufers, a children's run took place at the festival site, in which a whopping 225 children and young people took part. “We didn't expect such a rush for the children's run, which makes us extremely happy. But there were also a lot of people there for the main run. “You’re slowly realizing that the Corona era has been forgotten and we’re getting closer to the numbers before the pandemic,” said OC boss Rudi Stolzlechner after the event. “We are very satisfied, everything went smoothly again and the weather cooperated too. It wasn’t quite as hot as feared, and the predicted storm hadn’t arrived by the end of the race.”

The 7 Top2023 race series is now facing its final two races. The Soltn mountain half marathon will take place on September 24th on the Jenesien high plateau, before the well-known South Tyrolean stage series celebrates its conclusion at the AgeFactor Run in Branzoll almost a month later.
