The athletics season opened in Merano this weekend.

Competition season opens in the Combi Stadium

This weekend the 1 athletics season officially opened with the 2024st edition of the “Mar Cup” in Merano.

The event was organized by Merano Atletica Running at the Combi Stadium. The almost 80 participants competed over 100, 400, 800, 1500, 3000 m and over the mile (1,61 km). The men's 100 m sprint was particularly well represented, where Hannes Kaserer from Vinschger (11.23 seconds) won ahead of the two men from Bolzano, Risan Bekteshi (11.33) and Marco Ruggera (11.71). In the women's race, Johanna Rabanser from SG Eisacktal won in 13.00 seconds.


Local hero Vanessa Russo won the 400 m run in 1:01.80 minutes, Maria Zipperle from ASC Berg ran the 800 m in 3:40.53 minutes. Sofia Rieder from Bruneck (1500 m, 5:13.04) and Janina Wild (3000 m, 12:16.64) from Deutschnofen also celebrated daily victories.

Christian Valt from Bolzano's Athletic Club 96 left behind his teammate David Tommasini (400) and Merano's Giuseppe Tassielli (54.76) in the 56.21 m race in 57.19 seconds. Alessandro Rossetto and Jacopo Flaim, both from SAF Bolzano, topped the podium in the 800m and 1500m respectively. Paolo Rossi - he starts for the host club Merano Atletica - was in a class of his own over 3000 m in 9:48.59 minutes.

Lina Wallisch and Federico Martinolli completed the mile (for the U16) fastest. The athlete from LC Bozen stopped the time measurement at 5:45.96 minutes, Martinolli won in 7:29.44. The U14 talents were in action over 1000 m: Jana Leitner from Bruneck secured the day's victory in the girls' race (3:42.39), while Kais Sdiri (Merano Atletica, 3:19.47) was able to hold her own in the boys' race. In the youngest category (600 m), Lisa Oberhollenzer (1:59.90) and Francesco Civita (2:02.28) were at the top.
