Saltn mountain half marathon: Abate wins ahead of Rungger

The Saltn Mountain Half Marathon is an atypical half marathon. The 21,1 km long route goes up and down (520 meters in altitude). The tour also went up and down or back and forth. Downhill, Gabriele Abate - multiple team world and European champion in mountain running - was in a class of her own, but uphill Hannes Rungger was a touch better today. Sarner's bad luck: Shortly before km 7 he had to surrender and stand still for 20 seconds. That probably cost him the victory. Rungger had to let Abate go for a while, but at km 17 Rungger was suddenly in the lead again. But on the final stretch down to the finish at the sports field, Abate showed off his class. In the end the gap between the two was 20 seconds. "If Hannes hadn't had these problems today, then I probably wouldn't have been able to win. I certainly still felt the strongman from Rovereto in my legs from yesterday's race. But I definitely wanted to be there and win, because I really liked this run," said Abate. Rungger can console himself with the fact that he has further extended his lead in the top 7 overall standings. Third-placed Rudi Brunner was already three minutes behind today.

Achmüller and La Marchina relay winners Halfway through the route near the little church in Langfenn, neither Abate nor Rungger was in the lead. Hermann Achmüller was fastest. However, the native of Brixen, who competes for the ASV Jenesien Soltnflitzer, only competed in the relay competition, which he won in a convincing manner together with Nino La Marchina (118:02). Given today's performance, Achmüller could have threatened the two first-place finishers over the full distance.

Fourth victory for Antonella Confortola In the women's race, Antonella Confortola's victory was never in danger. The 38-year-old Olympic medalist in cross-country skiing celebrated her fourth victory at Salten. The Trentino native needed 1:27:35 to cover the 21,1 km route. The winner was only faster on Salten three times than today. The course record, which Confortola himself holds at 1:22:19, was out of reach. Like last year, Mirella Bergamo came in second. The best South Tyrolean was not Edeltraud Thaler (4th) or Kathrin Hanspeter (6th), but Andrea Schweigkofler (3rd) from SC Meran. Nevertheless, Edeltraud Thaler extended her lead in the Top7 overall ranking before the finale on October 27th in Branzoll.

At the award ceremony on the Saltn, the winners beamed with OC boss Sepp Rungaldier. The winners were happy about 500 euros. Rungaldier was happy about a new record number of participants. 366 participants registered, 325 ultimately reached the finish line, including 41 two-person relay teams.
