Sexten is looking forward to a mountain running spectacle

After last year's weather-related cancellation, OC boss Gottfried Hofer and his team from the ALV Sesto Dolomiten are studying the weather forecast even more closely than usual these days. And what they are currently being presented with should reassure the organizers of one of the most beautiful mountain races in the world. As of today, everything indicates that the weather conditions will be good over the weekend. “Saturday is stable and the cumulus clouds mostly remain harmless,” says the current weather forecast from the State Weather Service – with a reliability of 80 percent.

As for the rest, the experienced organizers in Sexten are prepared for the renowned sporting event. “The intensive preparations of the past few weeks and months have largely been completed. Now let's get into the details. And of course there are also smaller problems that we try to solve as quickly as possible. We are really looking forward to this year’s race – on the original route and in what is expected to be dry weather. But we are prepared for all eventualities and have a plan B, i.e. an alternative route, ready,” explains OK boss Gottfried Hofer two days before the showdown.

The route is tough The start of the South Tyrol Drei Zinnen Alpine Run 2018 takes place on Saturday, September 15th at 10 a.m. at the parking lot at Haus Sexten. The 1000 registered participants from 23 different nations then head out of the valley through the Sesto village center and then back to Moos. The athletes run across the lush green larch meadows of the “Fischleintal” to the Fischleinboden hut and on to the valley end hut. Shortly after the valley end hut (after approx. 8,2 kilometers) at the Bacherntal-Altensteinertal crossroads, turn left towards the Zsigmondyhütte.

From here a selective serpentine path leads up to the Zsigmondyhütte and then on to the Büllelejochhütte at 2575 meters above sea level. From here, the grand finale of the South Tyrol Drei Zinnen Alpine Run awaits the athletes: from the Büllelejochhütte the route goes in front of the Paternkofel, above the Lake Constance, over the last three kilometers to the finish at the Drei Zinnen Hütte (2405 meters above sea level). In total you have to cover 17,5 kilometers with an altitude difference of 1350 meters.
