Italy leads in the final: Now they can bag Sinner!

In 1976, Italy won the Davis Cup for the first and only time. Now, almost 50 years later, will the next coup follow? In any case, the Azzurri are reaching for triumph: Now Jannik Sinner can make everything clear.

Matteo Arnaldi was the tragic figure in Italy's tennis team in the quarterfinals of the Davis Cup: The 22-year-old missed three match points in the first game against the Netherlands and then had to admit defeat. In the end it was Jannik Sinner who brought Italy into the semi-finals and then into the final.

Arnaldi had to watch in the semi-finals, but coach Filippo Volandri gave him confidence again in the final against Australia. And the tennis professional from Sanremo paid this back. Arnaldi (ATP 40) prevailed against Alexei Popyrin, number 44 in the world, in three sets 7:5, 2:6, 6:4. The Italian showed a very strong first section, but then suddenly weakened significantly, only to regain his old strength in the final set. The celebration after the victory was huge.

Now Jannik Sinner can lead his Azzurri to Davis Cup triumph. The world number 4 will face Australia's best tennis player, Alex De Minaur, in the second singles match at 19 p.m. If Sinner wins, the victory is perfect. If he loses, the doubles game has to decide. Click here for the SportNews live ticker.
