Medvedev cancels Rotterdam – and thus opens a door for Sinner

Daniil Medvedev has to cancel the ATP 500 tournament in Rotterdam. This is the chance for Jannik Sinner to become number 3 in the world.

The ABN Amro Open begins on Saturday in Rotterdam (NED). Last year Daniil Medvedev won the tournament when he defeated Jannik Sinner in the final in 3 sets. This year, however, the defending champion from Russia will be missing - in contrast to the South Tyrolean.

While Medvedev is not taking part in the ATP 500 tournament in the Netherlands, Sinner is the number 1 seed. This opens up new opportunities for the Sesto native. Medvedev loses the 500 points from last year and Sinner could - if the tournament goes ideally - become the new number 3 in the ATP world. Although Sinner also has to give up 300 points (because he didn't compete in Montpellier), he could still overtake Medvedev if he wins the tournament in Rotterdam. Sinner would then have 8270 points in his account. After deducting the 500 Rotterdam points, Medevev stands at 8265 points.

But winning the tournament won't be easy for Sinner. The field of participants in Rotterdam is top-class. Even after Medvedev's cancellation, there are many top players on the list of participants: Andrey Rublev, Holger Rune, Hubert Hurkacz, Alex De Minaur and Grigor Dimitrov.
