Davis Cup triumph: Jannik Sinner makes himself immortal!

It was a dream year in which Jannik Sinner ran out of superlatives. Now he topped it all off: On Sunday, the South Tyrolean led Italy to win the Davis Cup - and thus made himself immortal in the boot state.

It was in the distant year of 1976, at the Estadio Nacional de Chile, when Italy was able to lift the Davis Cup trophy for the first and last time. A dry spell of 47 years followed, during which the Azzurri made it to the final three more times, but always had to wait for their second triumph. Until, yes, until this young boy named Jannik Sinner stepped onto the big tennis stage.

With incredible performances, the South Tyrolean almost single-handedly led his team to the final of the Davis Cup, which is considered the world championship for national teams. In the final on Sunday evening against Australia, Sinner finally crowned himself and his colleagues and completed the triumph with a flawless 6:3, 6:0 over Alex De Minaur. A double was no longer necessary that day, as Sinner's teammate Matteo Arnaldi had already won his game and thus served the South Tyrolean with “match point”.

Sinner's incredible achievements

It was outstanding what Sinner achieved these days in Màlaga, Spain. Anyone who thought that the 22-year-old would travel to the Iberian Peninsula with his head hanging low after the final defeat at the ATP Finals - which he suffered just seven days ago - was very disappointed. First Sinner caught up with him quarter-final against the Netherlands the chestnuts out of the fire, then he hit in the semi-finals the great Novak Djokovic twice within a few hours – first in singles, then in doubles. And finally he achieved total triumph in the final. Sinner played five games this week (three in singles, two in doubles), and the fourth in the world rankings won all five. That alone shows what great form the Sesto team is currently in.

While Sinner always had to make up for his colleagues' 0-1 deficit in the quarter and semi-finals, he received support on Sunday: Matteo Arnaldi, number 44 in the world, defeated the Australian Alexei Popyrin (ATP 40) in a truly hellish ride in the first final game with 7:5, 2:6, 6:4 and thus secured the “match point” for Italy. Hardly anyone expected that Sinner would miss this opportunity. The Puster player had a perfect record against Alex De Minaur: five games, five wins, only one set loss.

Italy is in love with Jannik Sinner

This series was to continue on Sunday: With a quick break, Sinner immediately pulled away and took the first set. The second section was Jannik Sinner at its best: the South Tyrolean didn't let his opponent play a single game and converted his third match point into victory after 82 minutes. At that point, both Sinner's teammates and the fans in the stands were already completely excited. Italy is in love with Jannik Sinner - and the 22-year-old boy from the South Tyrolean mountain village is already immortal in the azure boot state.
