WTA Baku: Karin Knapp moves into the semi-finals

Karin Knapp's highs at the tournament in Azerbaijan continue. After her victories against the Swiss Stefanie Vogele (6:1, 6:4) and the Estonian Anett Kontaveit (6:1, 6:0), the South Tyrolean, who is number two on the seed list in Baku, was also eliminated in the round of XNUMX on Friday the Russian Alexandra Panova and thus made it into the semi-finals perfect.

In the first set, Knapp first pulled away with a break to 2:1 and then with his own service to 3:1. When the score was 4:2, she was able to take her opponent's serve again and a little later she used the first set point to make it 6:2.

Knapp had a lot more trouble in the second half of the game. Although she managed to break immediately, she had to accept the Russian's re-break immediately afterwards. In the next four games, both players performed their service, especially when the score was 3:2 in Panova's favor. Knapp fended off a total of four break points and in return had to miss six game balls before equalizing to 3-3.

With her fourth break in total, she then moved away to 4:3 and had to miss her first match point at 5:4 before Panova took serve from the Luttacher for the second time and made it 5:5. Afterwards, both servers held each other harmless and so the second set had to be decided in a tiebreak. Knapp initially took a 5-1 lead and after two hours and three minutes of play used the third match point to win 6-2, 7-6(4).

In the semifinals again against a Russian

In the semifinals, the local tennis player will once again face a player from Russia, namely Margarity Gasparyan (WTA 112), who prevailed against her compatriot Evgeniya Rodina 6:3, 6:2 in the quarterfinals. The game is scheduled for Saturday at 9 a.m. (CEST). Knapp and Gasparyan have not yet faced each other on the WTA tour.
