Swiss Schladming party with a South Tyrolean highlight

Hannes Zingerle hasn't been a big name in the ski world until now. That changed on Wednesday. With a slapstick performance, the Gadertaler created a strange moment that will probably be found in every ski season review. After a strong drive in the second round, Zingerle lost his balance before the last gate and fell headfirst into the finish ( SportNews berichtete ). The best thing about it: The Ladiner set the fastest time.

A record that lasted for a long time. The 27-year-old took 14th place in the final rankings, which is Zingerle's best career result. So far he has never gotten higher than 22nd place. Remarkable when you look at the South Tyrolean's starting number. Zingerle started the first run with the “58” on his chest, but worked his way sensationally up to 26th place and put in a carefree and error-free run in the second run that pushed him far ahead.

The Gadertaler was therefore the best Azzurro in this race, apart from him only Giovanni Borsotti (18th) collected World Cup points. Alex Hofer, Simon Maurberger, Alex Vinatzer and Tobias Kastlunger were already stuck in the first run.

Meillard and Caviezel come out on top The Swiss put on the big show on Wednesday - even though top star Marco Odermatt was missing. The overall World Cup leader suffered a minor knee injury in Kitzbühel at the weekend, which is why he took a break on Wednesday. At the finish, he still cheered on his colleagues – especially Loic Meillard and Gino Caviezel. The two celebrated a Swiss double victory ahead of the Austrian Marco Schwarz.

Meillard's performance was particularly impressive. In the first round he was in a league of his own and distanced himself from the competition - with the exception of Caviezel - by over a second. When it came to the decision, the Swiss rider didn't miss the point and won his second World Cup victory, his first in the giant slalom.

Caviezel made it onto a podium for the third time, while Schwarz was allowed to step onto the giant slalom podium at a World Cup race for the first time. And that despite the fact that he won the bronze medal in this discipline at the 2021 World Cup.

The men's skiers continue in Cortina d'Ampezzo, where two Super-Gs are on the program this weekend.

40.000 fans didn't miss the traditional night slalom in Schladming on Tuesday. There weren't nearly as many people there on Wednesday, although the night giant slalom on the Planai would have deserved such a number. Memorable scenes took place in Styria.
