These South Tyroleans drive the classics in Kitzbühel and Flachau

The Ski World Cup is moving to Austria from Tuesday: Downhill training for men begins in Kitzbühel, and the prestigious night slalom is on the program for women in Flachau.

The long Wengen weekend is still in the minds of the speed specialists, but the two-day break is over on Tuesday. The first of two training sessions for the Hahnenkamm downhill run is taking place in Gamsstadt. The weather gods obviously mean well for the athletes. All competitions should go ahead as planned. Snowfall is only forecast in valley areas on Friday night, but this should quickly subside or stop at the beginning of the day.

Three South Tyroleans are taking part in the speed races in Kitzbühel, namely Dominik Paris, Florian Schieder and Christoph Innerhofer. In addition to the South Tyrolean trio, Mattia Casse, Nicolò Molteni, Benjamin Alliod, Pietro Zazzi, Guglielmo Bosca and Matteo Franzoso tackle the Streif.

Paris has already celebrated four victories on the Streif and been on the podium seven times. Schieder achieved a sensational top-3 finish in the downhill last year. Innerhofer also reached the podium twice in the Super-G - most recently in 2017. This year, however, there will be two downhill runs on Friday and Saturday before the slalom skiers are challenged on the Ganslernhang on Sunday.

Tschurtschenthaler wants points

On Tuesday, the ski ladies will be taking part in the traditional night slalom in Flachau. With Vera Tschurtschenthaler there is also a South Tyrolean in Italy's squad, which is completed by Marta Rossetti, Martina Peterlini, Lara Della Mea, Beatrice Sola and Emilia Mondinelli. The 26-year-old Tschurtschenthaler is racing in Flachau for the second year in a row and is on the hunt for her first World Cup points this season.

“It was cold all week, I expect a well-prepared slope,” says Italian slalom coach Roberto Lorenzi. “The character of this slope is the waves. We have tried to recreate the same conditions in the last few days.” The Azzurre want to rehabilitate themselves in Flachau for the debacle in Kranjska Gora, when not a single athlete qualified for the decision.
