Training in St. Moritz: Nicol Delago at the front

After numerous cancellations, the speed season is finally set to open this weekend when there are two Super-Gs and a downhill in St. Moritz. The first training session took place on Wednesday, which gave South Tyroleans confidence.

The Italian winter sports association FISI has nominated 12 athletes for the speed weekend, including Nadia and Nicol Delago, Karoline Pichler and Teresa Runggaldier. The latter two athletes have to put everything into the balance during training as they compete in an internal qualification for the downhill. The 24-year-old Runggaldier could not recommend herself on Wednesday in cloudy weather: Peter Runggaldier's daughter, who is not a member of the national team, ended up outside the top 3,18, 50 seconds behind. Karoline Pichler was 11 hundredths of a second faster.

Nicol Delago, meanwhile, wanted to prove that she could be at the forefront in the place where she made her World Cup debut way back in 2015, but never finished better than 28th in the downhill. The 27-year-old finished 1,08th, 7 seconds behind Christina Ager. Sofia Goggia was two positions behind (+1,15). Mikaela Shiffrin (+ 1,18) completed the top 10. Ager had already set the best time in the only training session in Zermatt-Cervinia. The 28-year-old has won ten European Cup races in her career, but her last top 10 result in the World Cup was over four years ago.

Another chance on Thursday

Nadia Delago took 20th place (+1,56) after a strong run in the upper section. Just like sister Nicol, the Olympic bronze medalist in St. Moritz has never been able to get up to speed. She achieved her best placement last year with 26th place in the downhill. There is another training session in St. Moritz on Thursday. The Super-Gs will be raced on Friday and Sunday, and the downhill run is planned for Saturday.
