Because of Klæbo: cross-country skiing earthquake in Norway

In a press statement, the 26-year-old justified his departure with the events of the past few weeks surrounding the Norwegian Ski Association and the national team. The budget for the cross-country skiing division was also cut due to the departure of a long-standing major sponsor, meaning that only 20 instead of 24 runners will be part of the selection.

“With my resignation, the ski association can reduce its costs and instead spend money on other athletes. Yes, now they no longer have to pay for my high-altitude camps,” Klæbo was quoted as saying in the press release: “I have several colleagues in the national team who feel badly treated in this withdrawal process.”

Withdrawal from selection does not mean the end of his cross-country skiing career. “There were never negotiations between the association and me on this matter,” said Klæbo: “As a result of the decision, I lose income and have to cover my costs. Now I’m going to finance it myself.”

Not eligible to start now The Norwegian association wants to respect Klaebo's decision, even if they had hoped for a different solution. The association is now discussing whether an existing rule should be repealed. According to this, only athletes who are members of the national team are allowed to take part in World Cups and international title fights. There will be no major events in cross-country skiing this coming winter. In addition to Klæbo, another top athlete is making room in the national squad: Hans Christer Holund, four-time world champion (two times in the individual), announced the end of his career at the age of 34. “It was a difficult decision. But with two kids and lots of projects in mind, it's the right one. “Also so that young, hungry athletes have better opportunities to make a splash at the 2025 home World Cup in Trondheim,” said Holund on social media.
