Daniel Grassl is taking a new path (again).

The 2022 European vice champion, who first trained in Boston with Alexei Letow and Olga Ganicheva last fall and then worked for several months in Moscow in Eteri Tutberidze's team, now wants to go back - at least for the time being. The 21-year-old will set up camp in Turin and prepare there for the sporting challenges of the coming season.

South Tyrol's figure skating star recently announced on his social media: “Dear friends, after my experience in the USA and Russia, I have decided to return to Italy to continue my training here and prepare for the coming seasons. The four-time Italian champion faced a lot of criticism for his decision to train in Russia in the second half of last season, especially on social media and in the national and international press, although Grassl always emphasized from the start that his decision was pure was made for sporting reasons and away from any political views.

Now the first form test awaits With new motivation and more stability, he was able to prove himself and find his way back to his old form, especially in this second phase. Grassl wants to demonstrate this for the first time in the new season in just under 2 weeks. The 21-year-old's first challenge will take place on September 20th. At the traditional Nebelhorn Trophy in Oberstdorf (Germany) as part of the ISU Challenger Series, the first points in the world rankings are at stake, which affects the group classification at major events such as the European Championships. In Oberstdorf, Grassl will face the reigning European champion Adam Siao Him Fa from France and the Japanese Koshiro Shimada.

A well-known trainer on Grassl's side Daniel Grassl's current coach is no stranger to the Italian figure skating scene. Edoardo de Bernardis also supervised Carolina Kostner and accompanied her at the World Figure Skating Championships in 2010. His students include the reigning junior Italian champions Amanda Ghezzo and Raffaele Zich. De Bernardis studied acting, dance and expression at the Accademia del Teatro Nuovo in Turin and also works as a choreographer for numerous international athletes.
