Carolina Kostner is European champion - UPDATE

It was the perfect evening in Sheffield. And if you want to criticize something about Carolina Kostner, look for the famous fly in the ointment, then at most the color of her dress designed by star designer Roberto Cavalli. Because it shimmered on the ice of the English industrial city in the most beautiful shades of silver. For Carolina, who won the European Championship title for the fourth time after 2007, 2008 and 2010 and won the seventh European Championship medal in a row, “gold” would simply have been a better fit that evening.

Kostner, who didn't risk anything in the free skate but brought a flawless performance onto the ice and was also very confident in all the jumps, wore her competitors down. The 24-year-old from Val Gardena collected 183,55 points in the short program and free skate and took more than 16 points off second place, the Finnish Kiira Korpi (166,94). Third place went to Elene Gedevanishvili, who was awarded 165,93 points by the judges. With her dream result, Kostner missed her personal best by a whisker. And that even though, as mentioned, she didn't risk anything and safely took home the title in her tenth European Championship participation.

“I'm not only happy about my fourth European title, but above all that I feel so much joy while skating and that everything just fits together. I came to Sheffield as favorite, a role that doesn't suit me. But I mastered the challenge and am happy that I was able to regain the title that I lost in Bern in 2011,” the ISU Grand Prix overall winner was quoted as saying by the online edition of “Gazzetta dello Sport”.
