A balance between frustration and joy

Although Cortina d'Ampezzo is not known to be in South Tyrol, the 41-year-old still feels at home at the foot of the Tofane. The exceptional athlete had always reached the final of seven World Cup races - he even reached the top four times. In the parallel giant slalom, Fiwickeler was defeated for the first time. He won all of the last three editions in Cortina. And so he was the big favorite on Saturday too. Although he was denied the 20th World Cup victory of his career, third place made a botched start to the season forgotten. Nadya Ochner also showed significant improvement - she came in a strong fourth place after a heart-stopping finale. The ranks 22, 7 and 11 at the start of the season did not meet the old champion's standards, but were due to a persistent tendon injury. He obviously had this under control on Saturday, because from the qualifying onwards, Fischnelller made it clear to his competitors who was the master of the house. He set the best time and was therefore always able to choose the course in the final runs in the evening. A mistake is costly In the round of 16 against Zan Kosir (Slovenia) he decided on the supposedly faster red course, but fell behind and only made up for it in the flat final part. That's why he changed his tactics in the quarterfinals and switched to the blue course. This was successful against Radoslav Yankov from Bulgaria, so he chose blue again in the duel with the Swiss Dario Caviezel. In the middle of the race, the favorite made a serious mistake that cost him the final. Fischlerler almost made up the big gap, but in the end two hundredths of a second tipped the scales in favor of the Swiss. At least the South Tyrolean took third place in the small final that followed. Caviezel was happy about the victory, while South Korea's Sangho Lee came second. Daniele Bagozza took a good fifth place, while Edwin Coratti, Gabriel Messner and Aaron March did not overcome the qualifying hurdle. In the hundredth unlucky Ochner was even more unlucky than Fiwickeler: In the duel for third place against Ladina Jenny (Switzerland), the athlete from Burgstall drove a furious final section, but failed to make it onto the podium because of a measly hundredth of a second. The 28-year-old had previously failed in the semi-finals against Ester Ledecka after eliminating Carezza winner Daniela Ulbing from Austria in the quarter-finals.
