The example of the German men shows how complicated the starting situation is, where three top people are fighting for two tickets. Andi Langenhan, fourth at the Olympics, Ralf Palik, vice world champion in 2016, and Johannes Ludwig, the best German in fourth place at the 2017 World Championships, are almost on a par in the internal rankings behind the certainly qualified Olympic champion Felix Loch.

Open questions in the South Tyrolean Olympic team

As far as the Olympic delegation from South Tyrol is concerned, the situation only seems to be clear for the women: both Andrea Vötter (once 6th) and Sandra Robatscher (once 8th and 9th) achieved top 10 results in the World Cup and should be set. It is unlikely that a third woman will be taken along.

In the men's category, South Tyrol's only winner so far, Kevin Fiwickeler, has secured his ticket. His cousin Dominik still fell short of expectations, but a 6th and 9th place should be enough for the nomination. Theo Gruber (twice 9th) currently has better cards for the third ticket than Emanuel Rieder (once 14th).

There are only two starting places for the doubles and they are fiercely contested. Rieder/Rastner are probably seeded with a 2nd and a 4th place. The veterans Oberstolz/Gruber still need a good result in Lake Placid, because so far there has only been one top 10 place (6th in Igls). The young Malleier/Nagler also achieved 6th place. It remains to be seen how team boss Armin Zöggeler decides.

World Cup continues in January

Before the Olympic Games, the luge athletes will compete in four World Cup races in January, namely at Königssee and in Oberhof, Lillehammer and Sigulda.
