Broncos Sterzing: Axel Kammerer new coach, Taylor leaves

Former youth coach Mitch Pohl led the training in Sterzing in the last few weeks. When it became apparent that they would probably not find adequate support for the youth sector, the Broncos went looking for a new head coach for the first team and found one in Axel Kammerer.

The 49-year-old from Bad Tölzer is a former teammate of Mitch Pohl and can look back on a wealth of experience as a professional ice hockey player in the first Bundesliga or DEL as well as in the German national team at World Championships and Olympic Games. He should be an excellent motivator who prefers the fast-paced and no-frills power ice hockey that suits the Broncos well and plays to their strengths.

His coaching career began in 2000/01 when the legendary “Alpenvulkan” Hans Zach brought him to the DEL as an assistant for the Kassel Huskies. Two years later, the two moved to the Kölner Haien together before Kammerer returned to the Huskies as head coach in 2003/04. After a difficult season, he was given a leave of absence in January and only returned to the fold after a year off, this time as head coach of his hometown club Bad Tölz. With the Lions he was relegated from the 2nd Bundesliga, came 3rd in the Oberliga the following year and led the Lions back to the second highest division with the championship title in 2007/08. There, his team finished the first season after being promoted again in second place before the Lions had to stop playing before the playoffs due to insolvency proceedings.

After mixed years, Kammerer was brought to the Schwenninger Wild Wings for the 2009/10 season, which he led to the final twice as head coach and sparked true euphoria around the team. After four defeats in the first five games of the 2011/12 season, he had to resign from his position and then became assistant coach for the German U20 national team. He was hired at SC Riessersee for the 2012/13 season, but was given a leave of absence in January due to a lack of sporting success and has been without a job since then. “This is my first adventure abroad and I’m really excited. It's not easy to take over a team at this time, but I'm really looking forward to the new task," explained Kammerer when he led the first training session yesterday. His contract runs until the end of the season.

Taylor ends season injured, Florian Runer signed

There's also some bad news for the Broncos: Forward Justin Taylor's injury has proven to be so serious that his season must be considered over. More detailed examinations last week revealed damage to the anterior cruciate ligament, which required extensive rehabilitation, which would have pushed the earliest possible deployment time to the end of March, or more likely the beginning of April. The club and the former Villach striker agreed that in this situation it would be best for Taylor to return to Canada. Taylor only played six championship games for Vipiteno this year and scored three assists.

Florian Runer could join the Broncos for this. The Bolzano defender was already reported in January. He has been under contract with HC Valpellice for the last five seasons and was an important pillar in the back line. Runer has been studying in Innsbruck since autumn.

The 182 cm tall, 78 kg right-handed shooter has played 205 games in the Italian top flight and was also part of the Italian U18 and U20 national teams. He is currently completing an orientation internship as part of his studies, which is why he will not be able to train with the team before February 20th. It is not yet clear whether he will join the team permanently or whether he will only be available on call.
