EV Bozen on the brink of extinction – “This A2 series is not for us”

An open dispute has broken out in Serie A2 over the realignment of the league. While the majority of clubs, namely Eppan, Kaltern, Neumarkt, Val Gardena and Merano, support inclusion in the Inter-National League, some clubs are resistant to this idea. In the future, the INL will include teams from Italy, Austria and Slovenia, which would result in a drastic reduction in the number of championship games in the Serie A2, which is taking place at the same time. The Italian second division champion would therefore be determined after a simple round trip and a final Final Four. Added up, that would be around twelve games per team.

“We cannot make such a compromise under any circumstances,” rumbles EVB Vice President Manfred Klotz, “Not only we, Pergine too is ready to get out. The INL project is based on an initiative by five clubs that apparently can afford to take part in a cross-border championship. EV Bozen cannot cover these expenses. The INL has no advantages for Italian ice hockey, only the costs are getting higher and higher.”

Those in charge of the Blue-Whites are also bitter about the shortened Serie A2 season. “What point would it make for us to take part in a championship with only twelve games?” asks Klotz.

The end of an era

It can therefore be ruled out that all second division teams will find a common denominator. Specifically, for EV Bozen this means that the senior area will be closed. After three years in the A2 series, the Talferstadt team could withdraw to the C/U26 series.

An adventure with few ups and many downs

The EVB left this in 2010 after the final win against Toblach. Three years followed with exceptional numbers in the second division. In the premiere season, they only managed to win one point in 32 games and this with a goal difference of 57:246. A year later, EV Bozen finished the championship with 5 wins (two of them after extra time), 37 defeats, 16 points, 80 hits and 222 goals conceded. In the past season, the people of Bolzano managed to achieve 42 successes (9 in the penalty shootout) and 1 points (goal difference of 29:104) in 200 matches. In summary, EV Bozen played 116 matches in Italy's second highest ice hockey league, of which 14 were won and 102 ended in defeat. Battisti and Co. scored 214 goals and conceded 668 at the same time. These were probably the last ones for a long time. The EVB's most successful player in these years was Stanislav Jasecko, who scored 65 points in 66 games (18 goals and 48 assists). The most goals in the Bolzano jersey, however, were scored by Dylan Stanley, who netted 29 times in 32 matches. Franz Josef Plankl scored a total of 2 times for EV Bozen in the A27 series.
