The new Serie A: Fewer games, more balance

The new Serie A (and no longer Elite.A) is in the starting blocks: a new championship with 12 teams, whose formula also takes into account the commitments of the Italian national team, which will be in action in the World Cup Group B next April. The new game mode will be officially announced on Thursday when the association leadership presents the new Serie A season in Bolzano.

In the meantime, some news has already leaked. In the coming season, the basic round should only consist of one round and two rounds (22 match days). This is followed by the intermediate round in which the six first-placed teams after the regular season will play in the “Master Round” and the remaining six in the “Relegation Round” in a return round (10 match days). There is also another round where each individual team plays the Master Round once against all teams in the Relegation Round and vice versa (6 rounds). The top five teams in the Master Round qualify directly for the playoff quarter-finals. The entire play-off will be played in best-of-seven mode.

The remaining three playoff places are to be awarded in a pre-playoff in a best-of-three series. The sixth-placed team in the Master Round will face the fifth-placed team in the Relegation Round, while the four first-placed clubs in the Relegation Round will fight for the other two quarter-final tickets. (1st against 4th, 2nd against 3rd). For the last-placed team in the relegation round, however, the season ends prematurely.

The format of the Italian Cup should remain the same. Accordingly, the best four teams qualify for the Final Four after the basic round. The best team gets to choose their opponent.
