New attempt: A league with less money and fewer transfer card players

So far it has been a series of developed proposals, all of which must first be put into practice and parts of which must be approved by the national ice sports association. The fact is, however, that in Italy's top ice hockey league they want to break new ground in order to give new impetus to the entire movement and regain lost appeal. The entire project is based on a four-year plan from which the local players are primarily intended to benefit.

Five transfer card players Starting next season, the number of foreign players will be significantly reduced. Of the nine transfer card players per team that have been approved so far, the aim is to reduce the number to five. From now on, not only cracks from non-EU countries would be included in the regulation, but also all foreigners and dual citizens, including those who are eligible to play for the Italian national team. A Giulio Scandella would be equivalent to a Patrick Rissmiller. Both would have to be signed as transfer card players. These regulations are intended to force all clubs to save money. A scenario like the current one, in which financially strapped clubs bring in mediocre players from abroad and use them to bolster their squad instead of relying on their own youth, should no longer exist. In addition, the loan transactions of players should be simplified bureaucratically.

The reactions are mixed As was to be expected, the proposals were not met with universal approval. While the majority of clubs - especially the South Tyrolean teams - are happy to accept the innovations, club officials in Asiago and Torre Pellice react perplexed. Unhindered by skepticism, the Lega leadership has set itself the goal of closing registrations for the coming season on May 15th.

At this point at the latest, we want to welcome one or two new clubs to the Elite.A field of participants. First and foremost, thoughts probably revolve around the teams that are currently hunting for pucks in the Inter-National League. Secretly, the Italian first division teams would be happy about any additional competitors.

The INL clubs are (still) resisting the call However, the question arises: Are the South Tyrolean clubs ready to leave the international stage after just one year? INL spokesman Werner Zanotti gives the answer: “At the moment there is no interest. We are at the beginning of a multi-year project that was clearly defined a year ago and which we will stick to together." Zanotti attaches further conditions to the possible return of the five South Tyrolean teams: "First of all, there needs to be a certain continuity in Italian ice hockey. In addition, we would only be able to manage a championship with four foreigners. Let’s see what the future brings, now we’re concentrating on the INL.” Statements like these are likely to cut to the core of the masterminds in Elite.A.

Now it remains to be seen whether they will manage to effectively implement the new guidelines and take the first step towards the much-cited continuity. Italian hockey would definitely thank them.
