Neumarkt takes the first step towards the title

The 1.350 spectators in the Würtarena saw an exciting game from the start, but it lacked a clear line due to the nervousness on both sides. Only as the encounter continued did Neumarkt become more dominant. This was particularly reflected in the first outnumbered situation, when the Wild Geese moved in front of the opponent's goal and Manuel Bertignoll, who was extremely strong today, finally took heart in the 18th minute. He hit the corner of the cross from an acute angle.

Even after the first break, the home team remained in control and converted the next power play into a goal. This time it was Rudi Locatin who gave the opposing goalkeeper the disadvantage. But what the HCN cracks can do, the EHC Bregenzwald players can also do. That's what it seemed like in this phase, because when Alex Sullmann and Paolo Bustreo were stewing in the “cooler box”, they used the double majority to reduce the score to 1:2 through Antti Kauppila. The hosts continued to weaken themselves with unnecessary penalties. However, these had no impact.

The master fights back

In the final third, both teams dueled on equal terms. The tension in the Neumarkt ice rink was palpable. When Neumarkt's opening victory was already in the air, Vorarlberg struck coldly: Christian Haidinger equalized three minutes before the end and sent both teams into extra time. Bregenzerwald pushed for an equalizer there, but the Neumarkt defense withstood the pressure. The decision was made in the penalty shootout - and this was in favor of the Unterlanders, because Jimmy Kilpatrick was the only one who managed to put the puck in the goal.

The two teams now have a few hours to replenish their energy reserves before the next meeting in the Würtarena on Sunday (18 p.m.).
