The SG Schlern wants to move up with the “Professore”.

After the first half of the season, SG Schlern was mentioned as a possible laughing third as champions in the 1st Amateur League Group B. This assessment came true after the start of the second half of the season.

SG Schlern couldn't have started the second half of the season better. Three wins from as many games brought the team from the high plateau to within two points of the top. Schlern, which moved from District A to Group B this year, has a new trainer on the line in Vincenzo Folino. We spoke to the 40-year-old about the season so far.

How satisfied are you with how the season has gone so far?

"I'm very satisfied. Especially because we have been able to continuously improve since the start of the championship. We had really good games in the first half of the season and the team's self-confidence increased as a result. But what makes me particularly confident is the very good development of the young players. Players born in 2004 and 2005 play regularly. In some cases, players born in 2006 are also used. That promises a good future.”

Is the use of young players a philosophy of coach Folino or a requirement of the club?

“It goes hand in hand. The club and I had a good feeling right from the start. The club has a concept that aims to have 90% of the players come from its own youth. There should only be a few reinforcements from away and only if they can really help the team. I have some young players in the squad and I never line up based on age. If I see during training that a young person is currently in better shape, then they will play, regardless of age. On the other hand, I have to emphasize that we have a very good mix between experienced players and young players. The experienced players help the boys a lot.”

How often does SG Schlern train?

“We have an alternating model. One week we train twice a week and one week three times. This works very well and I am convinced that such a model suits everyone involved. The players are definitely taking it well.”

The youngsters regularly move into the first team. Is there anything else to come?

"In any case. There are currently over 300 children chasing the ball in various teams and championships. There are certainly a lot of young players with a lot of quality coming up.”

After three wins from three games in the second half of the season, Schlern has a lot to celebrate.

Schlern is currently level on points with Latzfons Verdings in second place in the table, only two points behind Natz. Is advancement an issue?

“My goal and that of the club was to place among the top five teams in the table. We improved from game to game and are therefore deservedly in second place. When it comes to advancement, we don't hide. Nevertheless, Latzfons Verdings and Natz are the favorites. But if we end up at the top, then we will definitely tackle the topic of the national league. But before that, we have to continue to stay down to earth.”

“If we end up at the top, then we will address the issue of the state league.” Vincenzo Folino, coach of SG Schlern

The games against Natz and Latzfons Verdings are still on the program, but both away. What do you expect from these two games?

"That's correct. In the first half of the season we played a draw against both teams at home. Playing away against these two strong opponents is even different. But we will try and do our best.”
